DIAPHRAGM
The diaphragm is a rounded, disc-shaped barrier method of birth control made out of soft rubber latex. It is placed inside the vagina behind the pubic bone and over the cervix. Spermicidal jelly is placed in the diaphragm which must be inserted before intercourse. Additional vaginal spermicide (either jelly or cream) must be used if intercourse is repeated. The diaphragm must be left in place for six hours following the last act of intercourse before being removed.
How effective is a diaphragm?
Diaphragms are 82-94% effective.
What are the advantages of a diaphragm?
You won't experience any hormonal side effects with a diaphragm, and you can insert the diaphragm up to six hours before having sex. Also, the diaphragm won't affect sensation during intercourse if you have been properly fitted.
What are the disadvantages of a diaphragm?
You may experience more urinary tract infections while using a diaphragm. A diaphragm won't protect you from sexually transmitted diseases, and you will have to have your diaphragm refitted if you gain or lose 10 pounds or more.
Where can I get a diaphragm?
Diaphragms need to be fitted by a health care practitioner. If you are interested in using a diaphragm, contact your provider.
How much does a diaphragm cost?
At Aurora Medical Services, a diaphragm, with the examination and fitting, will cost about $100 with no insurance. If you have insurance, the costs will vary. The spermicidal jelly will cost anywhere from $8-$17 at drugstores, health clinics, and some grocery stores.
