PARAGARD®
Sometimes called the "Copper T", the ParaGard T380® contraceptive device is placed into the uterus. It was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1984 and has been used as a birth control method both in the US and around the world for many years. It is quite small (about 1 1/2" tall and wide), made of plastic with copper wrap, and shaped like the letter "T". Millions of women have used this intrauterine contraceptive safely and effectively.
How does the Copper IUD work?
Scientists believe that the intrauterine contraceptives work in many ways, not all of which are fully understood. It works mainly by interfering with fertilization of the egg, and by possibly killing sperm cells.
What are the advantages of the Paragard IUD?
The Paragard IUD is safe, effective, and easy to use. It is also less expensive over time than most forms of contraception. You don't need to remember to use it because it's always working. The Paragard also provides long-term effective birth control for 12 years, and you can take it out any time. Finally, unlike the Mirena®, the Paragard has no hormones, so you won't experience the same hormonal side effects.
What are the disadvantages of the Paragard IUD?
The Paragard can increase cramps and bleeding during your period. It can also increase you risk for uterine infections. You cannot use the Paragard if you are allergic to copper.
How much does the Paragard cost?
At Aurora Medical Services, the Paragard device plus insertion will cost $511, without insurance. With insurance, the price will vary. The Paragard is expensive to have inserted, but after your first appointment, this form of birth control is cost-free for 12 years. Paragard removal will cost $103 and is not always covered by insurance, even when the insertion was covered.
